Meningitis is a serious condition that can develop quickly, sometimes within hours. One of the symptoms most people associate with meningitis is a rash—but what does a rash look like in meningitis, and how can you tell if it’s something to worry about?
At Townhead Pharmacy, we help protect people from travel-related and vaccine-preventable illnesses, including meningitis. Whether you’re heading abroad or simply want to stay informed, recognising the early signs could make all the difference. Here’s what to know.
What Is Meningitis?
Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It’s usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection, though bacterial meningitis is far more serious and can be life-threatening without urgent treatment.
In some cases, meningitis can lead to sepsis, which can cause organ failure and death if not treated quickly. That’s why recognising the symptoms—and acting fast—is so important.
Common Symptoms of Meningitis
The symptoms of meningitis can appear suddenly and may include:
- –> A high fever
- –> Severe headache
- –> Stiff neck
- –> Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- –> Nausea or vomiting
- –> Confusion or drowsiness
- –> Seizures
- –> Cold hands and feet or limb pain
In babies and young children, symptoms may also include a high-pitched cry, floppy body, refusal to feed, or a bulging soft spot on the head.
But one symptom that often stands out—and prompts urgent action—is a rash.

What Does a Meningitis Rash Look Like?
The rash associated with meningitis can vary, especially in the early stages. It usually starts as small, red or purple pinprick spots, often appearing on the chest, arms, or legs.
Over time, these spots may:
- –> Multiply and spread across the body
- –> Join together to form blotchy patches
- –> Darken in colour to resemble bruising
- –> Feel flat to the touch or slightly raised
Unlike other common rashes, a meningitis rash doesn’t fade when pressed. This is called the “glass test”—and it’s one of the easiest ways to check.
How to Do the Glass Test
- Find a clear drinking glass.
- Press it firmly against the rash.
- Look through the glass—if the spots don’t fade, it may be a meningitis rash.
If the rash is present and doesn’t disappear under pressure, seek emergency medical help immediately—even if other symptoms haven’t yet developed.
When Does the Rash Appear?
The rash doesn’t always appear in the early stages. In some cases, it develops after other symptoms, such as fever and headache. For this reason, it’s important not to wait for a rash before seeking help.
Trust your instincts. If you or someone else is seriously unwell, act quickly—even without a rash.
Can Meningitis Be Prevented?
Yes—some forms of meningitis can be prevented through vaccination. In the UK, children are routinely offered vaccines for certain strains, such as MenB and MenACWY.
At Townhead Pharmacy’s travel clinic, we also offer meningitis ACWY vaccines for people heading to countries where the risk is higher, including:
- –> Certain parts of Africa
- –> Saudi Arabia (required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims)
- –> Other regions with poor access to healthcare or higher disease rates
Vaccination is especially important for:
- –> Travellers going to high-risk areas
- –> University students living in shared accommodation
- –> Teenagers and young adults
- –> People with certain underlying health conditions
Do You Need a Meningitis Vaccine Before Travel?
If you’re travelling to a country where meningitis is more common, the vaccine may be recommended or required for entry. For example, Hajj and Umrah pilgrims must show proof of a valid meningitis ACWY vaccination before they can enter Saudi Arabia.
At Townhead Pharmacy, we can help you:
- –> Check travel vaccine requirements for your destination
- –> Provide the meningitis ACWY jab if needed
- –> Issue a certificate for entry (if required)
- –> Offer personalised health advice for your trip

What to Do If You Suspect Meningitis
If you or someone else is showing signs of meningitis—don’t wait. Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E immediately. Early treatment saves lives.
Even if you’re not sure, it’s always better to seek help than to wait and see. Meningitis can worsen quickly, especially in children and young adults.
